The Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC), the premier recruiting agency of the state government, has released an important recruitment notification numbered Advertisement No. 01/2026 for the appointment of 145 Assistant Professor positions across various academic disciplines in Government Colleges throughout Arunachal Pradesh. This comprehensive recruitment drive represents one of the largest hiring initiatives in the higher education sector of the state and offers an exceptional opportunity for qualified academicians, researchers, and teaching professionals to contribute to the development of higher education in India's northeastern frontier state.
This recruitment is being conducted to fill vacancies in Government Degree Colleges operating under the administrative control of the Directorate of Higher & Technical Education, Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The positions are classified as Group A Gazetted (Non-Ministerial) posts, indicating their importance in the state's administrative hierarchy and the level of responsibility associated with these academic roles. Assistant Professors selected through this process will play a crucial role in shaping the academic future of thousands of students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate education in the state.
The 145 Assistant Professor positions are distributed across multiple academic disciplines including Arts, Science, and Commerce streams. The subject-wise distribution includes significant vacancies in core subjects such as English (32 posts), Education (9 posts), Commerce (6 posts), Mathematics (6 posts), Zoology (6 posts), Botany (5 posts), Physics (5 posts), Chemistry (7 posts), Political Science, History, Economics, Sociology (2 posts), and Anthropology (2 posts), among others. This diverse distribution ensures comprehensive coverage of academic disciplines and provides opportunities for specialists across various fields of knowledge.
What makes this recruitment particularly noteworthy is the adherence to University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations and norms for recruitment of teaching positions in higher educational institutions. The entire selection process has been designed in accordance with UGC guidelines, ensuring transparency, merit-based selection, and equal opportunities for all eligible candidates. The recruitment also incorporates appropriate reservations for Scheduled Tribes (ST), Scheduled Castes (SC), Other Backward Classes (OBC), Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) as per the provisions of the Constitution of India and applicable state government rules.
The salary structure for Assistant Professor positions is highly attractive, being aligned with the 7th Central Pay Commission recommendations. Selected candidates will be placed in Pay Matrix Level-10 with a basic pay range of Rs. 57,700 to Rs. 1,82,400 per month. In addition to the basic pay, Assistant Professors are entitled to various allowances including Dearness Allowance (DA) as revised from time to time, House Rent Allowance (HRA) or government accommodation where available, Transport Allowance (TA), and other admissible allowances as per state government norms. The total emoluments package makes these positions financially rewarding and ensures a comfortable standard of living.
The educational qualifications required for these positions follow UGC norms strictly. Candidates must possess a Master's Degree in the concerned, relevant, or allied subject from a recognized Indian University with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade in the grading system. For candidates belonging to SC/ST categories, a relaxation of 5% is provided, making the minimum requirement 50% marks. Additionally, candidates must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by UGC or CSIR, or State Level Eligibility Test (SLET/SET) conducted by state governments, or possess a Ph.D. degree as per UGC Regulations 2009 or 2016.
An important aspect of this recruitment is that candidates who have been awarded Ph.D. degrees from foreign universities or institutions ranking among the top 500 in World University Rankings are exempted from the NET/SLET/SET requirement. This provision recognizes international academic achievements and encourages globally qualified academicians to join the state's higher education system. The World University Rankings considered include those published by Times Higher Education, QS World University Rankings, or Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Ranking).
The age limit for these positions has been set keeping in mind both entry-level and experienced candidates. The maximum age limit is 30 years for General category candidates, 35 years for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates, and 37 years for candidates belonging to Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribes (APST). Age is calculated as on the closing date of the online application. These age limits provide adequate opportunities for both fresh postgraduates and those with teaching or research experience to apply for these prestigious positions.
The selection process is designed to be comprehensive and merit-based, ensuring that only the most qualified and suitable candidates are selected. It involves a two-stage process starting with screening by a Screening Committee that shortlists candidates based on their academic performance as per UGC regulations and guidelines. The screening is done considering the marks obtained in Bachelor's, Master's, and M.Phil./Ph.D. degrees as applicable. Candidates are awarded points based on their academic record, and those with higher points are shortlisted for the interview stage.
Shortlisted candidates are called for a personal interview which carries a total weightage of 100 marks. The interview is conducted by a duly constituted Selection Committee comprising subject experts, senior academicians, and administrative officials. During the interview, candidates are assessed on their subject knowledge, teaching aptitude, research orientation, communication skills, general awareness, and overall suitability for the position of Assistant Professor. To qualify for selection, candidates must secure a minimum of 50% marks in the interview. Relaxation for PwBD candidates is provided as per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
The final selection and merit list preparation is based on the combined score of academic performance during screening and marks obtained in the interview. The merit list is prepared subject-wise and category-wise, ensuring adherence to reservation policies. Candidates placed higher in the merit list are given preference for appointment. Final selection is also subject to verification of original documents, medical fitness certificate, and character verification as per government norms.
The online application process is conducted through the official APPSC website at appsc.gov.in. First-time applicants are required to complete a One Time Registration (OTR) process by providing basic details and creating login credentials. After registration, candidates can log in and fill the detailed application form for Assistant Professor positions. The application form requires candidates to provide personal details, educational qualifications, experience details if any, choice of subject, category, and other relevant information.
Candidates must upload scanned copies of their recent passport-size photograph, signature, and relevant certificates including educational qualification certificates, caste certificate (if applicable), PwBD certificate (if applicable), NET/SLET/SET certificate or Ph.D. degree, and any other documents as specified in the notification. The scanned documents must be in prescribed format and size as mentioned in the instructions. After filling the form and uploading documents, candidates must verify all information carefully before final submission as no corrections will be allowed after submission.
